Achsah, darling-gdd of Reumah

12 Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Achsah as a wife to the one who fights against Kiriath-sepher and takes it.” 13 Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took the city. So Caleb gave him his daughter Achsah for a wife.

14 When she came to Othniel, she talked him into asking her father for a field. As she came down from her donkey, Caleb said to her, “Why are you here? What do you want?” 15 She said to him, “Give me a special gift. You have given me the land of the Negev. Now give me the wells of water also.” So Caleb gave her the wells in the high land and in the valley.

Judges 1: 10-16 New Life Version

Achsah as we find out in Chronicles 1 chapter 2: 46-50 is the daughter of Caleb from his second wife Maacah

48 Maacah, who acted as Caleb’s wife, gave birth to Sheber and Tirhanah. 49 She also gave birth to Shaaph the father of Madmannah, and Sheva the father of Machbena and Gibea. Caleb’s daughter was Achsah. 50 These were the children of Caleb.

And Maacah was the daughter of Abraham’s brother, Nahor and his second wife Reumah which we are told in Genesis 22:24.

20 Later it was told to Abraham, “Milcah also has given birth to the children of your brother Nahor: 21 Uz the first-born, Buz his brother, Kemuel the father of Aram, 22 Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph, and Bethuel.” 23 Bethuel became the father of Rebekah. Milcah gave birth to these eight by Nahor, Abraham’s brother. 24 And Reumah, the woman he kept who acted as his wife, gave birth to Tebah, Gaham, Tahash, and Maacah.

I did this as I was wondering who Achsah was besides his daughter, that she could get a well in the desert in of Negev.  Well the OT does not explicitly mention that her mother, Reumah,  was a concubine (which becomes a wife in the New Life version) of Abraham’s brother Nahor, and a particular favorite because of her status.  So what is her status?  We do not get explicit details but, Reumah means “lofty” and “exalted” and so we can assume that as her granddaughter, Achsah was given the “high ground” in her honor.

Othniel, her husband, btw means “Lion of God” and was first of all Judges, but that was in Joshua 15.
