I don’t know why this upset the Financial Times of London, but frankly I think it makes sense. My grandmother used to pull up the dandelions for a salad (I remember it was bitter so she said you put a nice viniagrette and you are good), and I know many who have had thistle. I really don’t care for some of these tastes, though I’ve tried them, so instead I feed my weeds to my chickens. They love them and are none the worse for wear. Tossing them out, or killing them with pesticides is just suicidal and leads to an endless spiral of chemicals. I think we need to avoid that.
The key of course is being to identify them. This site, devoted to edible weeds, may help you with that problem.
