The Lutheran Church of Hope in Ankeny, Iowa has won a prestigious AIA design award. The site and structure is organized at an angle to the grid of the city, so as to create an open relationship to the street while the sloping site allows the entire facility to be accessible to lower level adjacent to parking, complete with escalators/elevators. If all that was not enough, the church has 20 acres of property.
The chapel is open 24/7 and anchors the structure to the site, reaching upward with a symbolic cross, and outward with a wall that forms the southern face of the main gathering space. These concrete forms are sculpted with texture creating depth of sunlight and shadow throughout the day.
