3. Janet Reno, the first woman to serve as U.S. attorney general, died at her home in Florida of complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was 78.
Her eight years in office put her in the middle of some of the most divisive episodes of Bill Clinton’s presidency: the raid on a cult in Waco, Tex.; the seizing of little Elián González; and the Monica Lewinsky and Whitewater scandals.
