Today in the RC Calendar is the Feasts for Ss. Peter and Paul. It is rather fitting that they are mid-year in many ways as the two saints are really the embodiment of Christ‘s life here on earth — Peter through his founding of the Church of Rome and Paul by all his writings.
It was assigned by tradition to the same day of June in the year 67. They had been imprisoned in the famous Mamertine Prison of Rome and both had foreseen their approaching death. Saint Peter was crucified; Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was slain by the sword — Roman citizens could not be crucified.
I have always thought of the two as Deed and Spirit united in one glorious cause. Because this day was inaugurated before the Schism, even the Orthodox Church celebrates this day. Church was hot. It hit 90 here today.
