Judges: The ox-goad saves Israel

Judges 3:31 Shamgar son of Anath came after Ehud. Using a cattle prod, he killed six hundred Philistines single-handedly. He too saved Israel.  — The Message.

oxgoadShamgar used the same implement that Ehud had used, the “ox-goad” to save Israel in this chapter of action punched drama, so I wondered what this ox-goad was not coming from a farming family and found an old print of one in Wikipedia.  I’m going to admit right off, I had no idea that an ox goad was that long and heavy.  I imagined something much smaller, I guess like a fire log spear but as you see above it is humongous so Shamgar had to be a very large man to wield such a thing and obviously strengthened by the Lord to kill 600 Philistines without tiring.

An illustration of Shamgar and his oxgoad can be found here.  The artist did a nice job btw.
