Jesus is praised by the children, right after he curses the merchandise market at the Temple, an interesting comparison of the old and jaded vs the young and pure.
14 The blind and the crippled came to him in the Temple, and he healed them. 15 And the chief priests and the teachers of the Law became angry when they saw the wonderful things he was doing and soon the children began shouting in the Temple, “Praise to David’s Son!”
16 So Hebrew priests asked Jesus, “Do you hear what they are saying?” “Indeed I do,” answered Jesus. “Haven’t you ever read this scripture? ‘Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?”
The scripture that Jesus quote is from Psalm viii.2 which in itself is based on Genesis 1 about God’s Majesty & man’s place within His creation.
1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
8 The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
17 Jesus left them and went out of the city of Jerusalem to Bethany, where he spent the night.
Bethany we know is where Martha, Mary and Lazarus live as well as Simon the Leper. The name Bethany derives from the Hebrew “bethananiah” or the house (beth the second letter of the Hebrew alph-bet means House) of the poor and afflicted. Bethany is less than two miles away from Jerusalem, so Jesus was not traveling far and since it has a connotation of being for the poor and helpless, was probably a very pleasant place to rest amidst his turmoils.
Bethany btw, lies on the lower slope of the Mount of Olives; talk about everything being close. Currently it is call el-Azariyeh, Arabic for the place of Lazarus which is interesting as the Muslim’s do not revere Jesus, so I do not understand why they would commemorate his miracle.
